Nice is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the Côte d'Azur. It is situated on the pebbled coastline of the Baie des Anges. Founded by the Greeks, then favored by the European elite in the 19th century, the city has long attracted the attention of artists. The Henri Matisse Museum is dedicated to the artist's career in Nice. The Musée Marc Chagall houses some of the greatest religious works by the artist after whom it is named.
